"While they may not be as unintentionally disturbing as those Darth Vader and Stormtrooper porch light covers, there's something a little unsettling about these Star Wars shower heads.Sure, they're cool and all, but R2-D2 and Darth Vader just lurk there, staring, as you scrub your body. Now, we know Artoo can keep secrets: He's seen things, and not even uttered a beep or a whirl to C-3PO. But Vader? He just watches with that hollow-eyed gaze as he rains down angry water and wonders where his tormented life went wrong."

Bathroom Faucet Extender Ideas

How to Extend your Bathroom Faucet

Faucet

DIY Stuff you can do to extend your faucet. (Photo Credits)

When you have kids in the house, you may find the need to have a faucet with a longer reach so you would not have to lift them up every now and then for them to reach the faucet without over extending their tiny arms.

So what can you do?

Lifehacker India shared an idea. "How shall we make it? Take the lotion bottle and cut the main body in such a way that there is no bottom to it. Make sure that the mouth of the bottle is wide enough to have your faucet inserted in it. What now? Use the sandpaper to soften the edges of the bottle so that there is no risk of cuts or injuries. Now insert the bottle over the faucet in such a way that the mouth of the bottle fits right below the faucet from where the water would flow; it would then directly flow into your kids' hands and they would not need to be picked up by you all the time for having their hands washed." Plumbing Info  Another great hack that was published was this pool noodle hack featured over at quirkyfeeds.com.

"This video by the Crazy Russian Hacker showcases some innovative ways of using a pool noodle. These fun noodles are very inexpensive and come at about $3 to $5 a pop and are available at most sporting goods stores. Some of the lifehacks such as making a dog bed using an old sweater and dispensing water from a tricky sink are very useful."

But what if you do not need to extend your faucet but you need to clean it from hard water stains?

The DIY Village shared an easy way to get rid of these stains. " I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't taken care of this issue sooner, but I haven't until now!  When we moved into our home I noticed the faucet handle on the master bath shower was gunky.  It's one of those things you know you need to do but just don't want to deal with.  I dreaded the idea of soaking the faucet handle in some type of cleaner that was going to stink and then still having to scrub."

There is more to PVC pipes than its usual intended use which is basically for plumbing.

MarthaStewart.Com for instance shared in one of its posts, how to make a very chic Christmas tree out of extra PVC pipes. OSHA Plumbers

"Every little thing you love — from teensy toys to mismatched collections of vintage holiday items — has a home on this tree. Start by choosing a palette (we picked bright, happy colors), then fill pipes accordingly: We spray-painted plastic toy animals, spelled out joy and merry with letter magnets, and interspersed tiny wrapped presents, Advent calendar-style. Play around with the placement until you like the overall look (avoid grouping similar objects)."

All about the Urinal

The Controversial Male Urinal

Urinals

What would happen to society without them? (Photo Credits)

British researchers have found a way to convert urine into energy using a male urinal.

Science Alert says the energy found in pee is enough to charge a mobile phone. "Researchers in the UK have created a urinal that converts pee directly into electricity. The technology uses a set of microbial fuel cells (MFC), which contain tiny organisms that survive by breaking down urine and producing electricity as a byproduct.

An earlier model of the urinal was shown to successfully charge up a mobile phone, a stunt that made headlines back in 2013. But the team from the University of the West of England in Bristol, UK, wanted to find a more practical use for the technology, and is now working with Oxfam with the aim of lighting up refugee camps at night using nothing but urine."

Read the rest of the report here.

Not Happy

Not everyone though is happy about the existence of urinals. OSHA Plumbers

One opinion Ed published by The Guardian basically questioned why urinals have to exist and why males should urinate in the presence of other males. Plumbing Info

"Whether trough or bowl, the urinal subjects a man to the most wretched of indignities, to which we have become so inured that any deviation from the norm is considered effete. The urinal is inconsistent with civilisation: there is something barbarous about expecting men to expose themselves and carry out such a tender operation before others, especially while maintaining conversations with ostentatiously unembarrassed neighbours. And don't give me that "it's just a natural bodily function" nonsense: you don't leave the door open when you're in the cubicle, do you? (Do you … ?)."

'As a trans woman I'm not even safe from discrimination at the pub or public transit. What's going to happen if I'm forced into a men's changeroom?,' she wrote on Facebook. The Victoria resident said it is uncomfortable for everyone when she enters a men's bathroom, and she looks completely out of place applying lipstick and posing for mirror selfies while men urinate in the background."

What you may need to know about HVAC. (Photo Credits)

Every homeowner must have at least a basic knowledge on HVAC, how it works, and what to look and watch out for.

Huffington Post shared a very informative article for those looking to buy a new home, and would need a bit of information on HVAC Systems.

"But finding the right house isn't always easy to do. Often times, buying your first home can be a confusing process filled with uncertainty and hidden costs that don't surface until months or even years later. HVAC equipment is often one of those hidden costs. If you've been a renter all of your life, you probably haven't had to worry much about dealing with heating and air conditioning issues — except for letting in the HVAC technician when a problem arises. On average, a new furnace can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $12,000 and an AC unit could cost $3,500 to $10,000. If you are looking for a new home, it's important to consider the age and quality of the HVAC system so that you don't end up spending thousands of dollars in extra repairs or unit replacements."

What could be in that Deep Well?

the abyss

Deep Wells and what could be in it. (Photo Credits)

Deep wells are very helpful, yet mysterious at times. Anything could drop in it, or fall on unto it and it could be difficult to get back up. Plumbing Info

Just like this puppy rescued by firefighters. Yahoo.com reported that a Labrador pup fell into the deep hole. "The homeowners told Cherokee County Fire Department spokesman Tim Cavender they saw the stray yellow Labrador and a black Labrador the day before. The next morning, they were awoken by the black Lab barking before they discovered the yellow pup down in the well. 'I don't think anyone knows how it got down there for sure, but right now we're guessing it just fell in,' Cavender said. The rescue team was able to set up their tripod device and send firefighter Brendan O'Brian 75 feet down. He came back up with the puppy in his arms and firefighters gave it oxygen."

The cow was suffocating and panicking. It hit Zaki on his leg, which is still swollen. He strapped the cow  from under the stomach to the crane harness and sat on top of it.  He chose to do so to avoid the risk of the cow falling over him, in case things went wrong."

How to get rid hardwater stains in the toilet. (Photo credits)

For most homeowners, removing hard water stains – wherever it may have set in – is a pesky chore. But apparently, it does not need to much of an effort, and that you do not have to purchase expensive stain removers! OSHA Plumbers

Bitzandgiggles.com in fact shared that all you need to remove these stains is a pumice stone. "My best advice is just to clean the toilet more often and use the toilet more often. The two seem to go hand-in-hand, don't you think? Many of you may be asking, where do I find a pumice stone? Well, these babies are often used in pedicures and clear away the rough, dead skin from your feet. This post is getting better and better, isn't it? Try the nail polish/foot care aisle of your local drugstore or discount retailer. They aren't difficult to find! Best of luck to you and your toilet bowl. I can guarantee that once you try this, you will be amazed at the results. It's takes literally minutes and I promise that the pumice stone will not scratch a porcelain surface. It's funny how something so natural can clean better than some of the harshest cleansers out there. But it just goes to show you how helpful a piece of hardened lava foam can truly be!"

Just Vinegar

How to clean a faucet

Ways to clean a faucet

Keep the cleaner clean. (Photo Credits)

You use a faucet to get water to clean stuff, but have you ever gave it a though as to how to clean your own faucet?

Plumbing  Centsablemama.com shared how to clean hard water stains off a chrome faucet. "I just soaked a paper towel in distilled white vinegar, wrapped it around the worst area and let it sit for about 30 minutes.  Then, I used an old toothbrush to get in those hard to reach spots and get the gunk out. You can use the vinegar-soaked paper towel to clean the rest of the faucet that doesn't need to soak since vinegar is perfect for getting rid of water spots.  This method also works great for getting that hard water crust from the bottom of the faucet where it meets the counter."

Hard water, not hard to clean.

The website Worthy Tales shared yet another technique on how to remove hard water stains on faucets. Plumbing Association of San Diego

"Plenty of people who have had their faucets for a little while will have noticed them starting to look dingy. The dinginess often lingers regardless of how often the people in question clean the faucet, which may be a function of the manner in which they are cleaning it in the first place. In this video, people will learn how to clean their sinks and faucets in a way that is going to promote clarity and shininess, making the sink look like it is new again. Essentially, this trick just involves soaking the area in vinegar for a while and then wiping the hard water and calcium accumulation away with a sponge. Leaking pipes have more damaging consequences. (Photo Credits)

Leaky pipes do a lot more than waste water. It also has other unintended consequences.

Your Central Valley shared in its website that the leaky pipes are further contributing to a drought. Plumbing Association of San Diego

"Water experts say the very system that delivers water to our homes and businesses, is making the state's drought even worse! They say some cities have pipes that are at least a century old, and everyday, hundreds of gallons of water are leaking out of these pipes…Experts say when a leak is detected, pipes need to be replaced and flushed before they are put back into service, which requires extra water."

Check out the rest of the article here.

Something could have been making it worse

The LA Times for its part has reported that water conservation measures in view of a drought could be causing some leaky pipes in their area. A/C And HVAC

"Sanitation districts have worried about sewer spills for years, but officials say they have had to become especially vigilant in recent months as water use has plummeted. Shorter showers, more efficient toilets and other reductions in indoor water usage have meant less wastewater flowing through sewer pipes, sanitation officials say. With less flow to flush the solids down the system, those solids are collecting and can eventually damage pipes."

The Consequences of a Leaky Pipe

Why leaky pipes can cause illnesses

leaky pipe time

A Leaking pipe can get a lot of people sick. (Photo Credits)

At home a leaking pipe is a nuisance that usually merits a call to the plumber, or a trip to the hardware store to get materials for a DIY Fix.

On a larger scale though, leaky pipes have consequences that could even endanger a good number of people.

The British Broadcasting Corporation for instance says leaky pipes can cause illnesses to a large number of people. Plumbing Info

"Leaky pipes may be causing upset stomachs because they allow contaminated water to get into the system, it is being claimed. Sheffield University's Prof Joby Boxall issued the warning after studying the risks posed by leaky pipes. His team recreated a mains water pipe system and then damaged part of it to see what happened to the water. They found that when a pipe leaks, it not only spits out clean water, but also sucks in dirty water."

Read the rest of the article here.

Takes in Dirty Water

The Medical Daily shared the same University of Sheffield study to its readers. OSHA Plumbers

"Even worse, microorganisms and pathogens, once they've entered the network, might attach to the inner surface of the pipe. After multiplying there, these illness-causing microbes might become dislodged by a change in water pressure and then reach your tap, ultimately your drinking water, at even higher concentrations. While leaks don't pose a risk to drinking water most of the time, water pressure — more precisely, a sudden drop in water pressure is key. Whenever there is a sudden change in water velocity, total water pressure will drop. Valve or pump failures, for instance, might spur a pressure drop as would a sudden demand on the system — such as when firemen pump out large volumes to fight a blaze. In fact, pressure drops regularly take place in operational water networks, according to results from a few studies, most of them conducted in the United States."

Apart from illnesses, leaky pipes lead to water deficit.

In its website Natural News shared that in the United States, leaky pipes run up to a trillion gallons per year.

"At the moment, huge parts of the world — like California and Brazil — are suffering from drought. Something as simple as taking a shower whenever you want may become a luxury in the near future.
If we want to keep the luxury of running fresh water, we're all going to have to make an effort to reduce the 1 trillion gallons of water being lost each year. Not only is it important to fix our leaks, but we have to change our attitude as well."

This plumbing supplies company though is bent on making sure that they remain innovative in terms of the plumbing materials that they supply to both plumbing contractors and homes.

Twincities.com featured Uponor, the plumbing company that is serious in making sure that they remain on top of all the latest technologies and innovations when I comes to plumbing.

"The program is open-ended, yet somewhat exclusive. For one thing, Uponor doesn't want to stray too far from its core business — plumbing, heating and water management. Out of 40 new-idea candidates so far, Uponor has thrown in with just one prospect, New Brighton-based Upstream Technologies, which makes systems to treat stormwater run-off, licensing a patent from the University of Minnesota. In a recent interview, Gray talked about Uponor Innovations and how it fits in with the larger company."

Controlling the Thermostat

Controlling Temperature Indoors

Thermostat

Who controls the temp in your home? (Photo Credits)

A thermostat is an important fixture in any home, office, or structure for that matter. It often gets neglected, until a person feels too warm or too cold for comfort.

Wired.Com for instance, tried to explain why offices feel colder to women compared to men. Plumbing Info

“It is midsummer, and you came to work dressed appropriate for the weather outside, but you had to bring a scarf and sweater to survive a day in the meat locker otherwise known as “the office.” Meanwhile, the guy next to you is doing fine. He even has his sleeves rolled up. It’s like the building was designed to make you uncomfortable. And in fact, maybe it was. A new study suggests that the insulation that’s supposed to make buildings more energy-efficient doesn’t keep them warm enough—that the standards are biased toward the metabolic rates of men, who tend to burn hotter than women. Is the question of which sex gets to control the AC more complicated than that? Guess. Just guess.”

Dads Set the Temp

In a post published by the British website The Daily Mash, it let out its observation that the man of the house usually gets obsessed over controlling the thermostat.

“The nation’s fathers have forbidden anyone else to touch or even look at the central heating thermostat. Anyone passing through the hall is questioned closely about their intentions toward the heating beforehand and ordered to avert their gaze while in the thermostat’s presence.”

The Secret Stories of the Toilet Flush

The Toilet Flush Could be Extraordinary Sometimes too.

Urine-diversion flush toilets

A routine thing that became extraordinary to some. Photo Credits

Flushing the toilet is just one automatic thing any individual does, but for kids, it could sometimes be a magical process. After all, how can something just suddenly disappear right?

This boy featured over at elitedaily.com was adorably sad as he said goodbye to his pet goldfish.

“It can be hard for a little kid to fully understand the concept of death, which is probably why I was led to believe my goldfish lived for four years before by parents informed me there had actually been seven of them. The kid in this video, however, does what he can to keep it together while paying respect to his goldfish in the only acceptable way — throwing it in the toilet and watching it circle the drain in an incredibly transparent visual metaphor. It’s what he would have wanted.”

Flushed alive

This newborn infant however almost lost a chance to live after his parents flushed him out in the toilet as posted in the website wereblog.com.

“Residents living in a building in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province in China reported a sound of a baby crying right at their public restroom. Firefighters immediately came to respond and they were all shocked with what they found out.”

In Portland, Oregon over at the United States there is no drama in flushing toilets, just energy. Website minds.com featured turbines powered by flushing toilets.

“Hydoelectric turbines have been installed in one of the main water pipelines in Portland, Oregon, utilizing the water pressure to produce electricity. The turbines work where water is flowing downhill, and are already recouping some of the energy cost in keeping the water system running.  When fully in place, these pipe generators can power hundreds of thousands of homes. Gregg Semler, CEO of Lucid Energy, followed his dream of ‘helping water become more sustainable’ by developing this smart piping system.  Not only are they electricity generators, they also have state of the art sensors to detect change in water pressure to keep pipes from bursting, and the ability to detect if drinking water is contaminated.”

Water Sprinklers and How People Use Them

All About Water Sprinklers

The water sprinkler and its many uses. Photo Credits

Watering your lawn is easier when you have an automated sprinkler system.

Media outfit NBC News reported that a greener and more sustainable option is being eyed in California.

“The plush, green lawns that dot the cities and suburbs of California are in danger. New restrictions meant to cut water use by 25 percent amid a four-year drought could force home owners to let their grass go brown — unless new smart sprinkler controllers save the day. These gadgets use Wi-Fi and sensors to cut back water usage on lawns by anywhere from 30 to 50 percent.”

Winter Wonderland

In Louisiana though, a lawn turned into a winter wonderland last winter, after its owner forgot to turn it off when the weather reached below zero.

“Residents in one Baton Rouge, Louisiana community woke up Thursday morning to discover someone had forgotten to turn off the automatic sprinkler system. How did they know? Because temperatures overnight had fallen below freezing – and parts of their neighbourhood, coated in sheets of ice, resembled a winter wonderland. According to WVLA News in Baton Rouge, residents of the Windermere neighbourhood were fascinated by the bizarre “ice sculptures” the sprinklers had created, and came out to take photos of the impromptu display.”

Why You Should Install a Bidet in Your Toilet

The Benefits of Using a Bidet

DSC_0022.JPG

The Comfort and Luxury of having a Bidet. (Photo Credits)

It may be popular in other countries, but not all homes in the United States have it. Yes – the Bidet has not yet invaded most American homes.

Website Articles.Mercola.Com said that bidets have not been popular in the United States because of three main reasons. The most plausible theories for why Americans prefer to be sans-bidet include: History — In the 18th century, Britons had a disdain for French aristocracy (which were among the first to champion the use of bidets). When the early colonists came to America, they may have brought this sentiment with them.”

Read the rest of the reasons here.

The Luxury and Comfort it Provides

The New York Times meantime published an article in its website sharing the many comfort and luxuries that a bidet can provide.

“The seats, which range in price from about $250 to more than $1,700, are attachments for your toilet with at least two basic functions, and, depending on the model, a wide array of more luxurious extras. The basic features are warming your bottom, and then cleaning it with warmed water. The more luxurious appointments try to recreate something like an opulent spa. Some seats will dry your bottom with warmed air, sort of like being pushed through a carwash. Some use a fan and a catalytic converter to suck out the gases in the bowl, apparently removing any odors. Some sense when you’re approaching the toilet and spray a fine mist in the bowl, prelubricating it to aid with flushing. Many of the seats, as you might expect, offer a remote control to operate the spraying and other functions”

The Plumbing Profession is slowly becoming one of the most practical career a skilled individual may want to pursue.

In its website CNN Money quoted Billionaire and Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg encouraging high school graduates to pursue instead a profession like plumbing.

“The former mayor claimed that such careers are more important now than ever as technology has made it so middle class professions don’t pay like they used to. He believes that’s why the latest labor statistics show that wages remain stagnant even as employment has gone up.”

“A New York plumber and his son are multimillionaires after sitting on a winning Powerball ticket because they thought the jackpot had been won by a teacher. Anthony Perosi of Staten Island says he was on his way to do an inspection March 14 when he stopped at the 7-Eleven where he always buys lottery tickets when he is in the area. Perosi, 56, was at a bar a week later when another patron said the winning Powerball ticket had been won at that same 7-Eleven. The bartender, he says, told him it was a teacher who had won the $136 million jackpot.”

Sump pumps, although it does not get much attention, continues to be a vital machine in the home. Without it basements will get flooded and trouble will surely ensue because flooding brings about a whole new wave of problems such as damaged flooring, malfunctioning appliances, property destruction, and even molds.

But sometimes sump pumps fail. To this though website Lifehacker.Com has a solution to prevent flooding in your home. “Basically it uses a sonar rangefinder to monitor the depth of the water below his basement, and a Raspberry Pi to hook the system up to his home network and send out alerts. He set the system to alert him if the water level got within 20cm of his basement floor, which would indicate the pump was failing. This won’t fix the problem or restart the pump, but if he was on vacation it would at least give him time to ask a neighbor or repair man for help remotely.”
