What a slow drain means

Slow drains can be very frustrating, especially in the kitchen where things are bustling.

There are many reasons why a drain becomes slow. It could be a clog or a build up, but whatever the reason is, most experts would advise against the use of corrosive substances to fix the slow running drain. A/C And HVAC

Bobvila.com shared some possible solutions.

"If plunging doesn't clear the clog, use an auger.  If your drain opening is obstructed, sometimes a coat hanger wire with a small hooked end will bring up the clog. You can also detach the trap under the sink with a plumber's wrench in order to get at the clog or to rescue anything you've lost down there. Turn it through the clog, back off a little, then run it all the way through and pull the whole thing straight out of the drain. If you don't see an improvement in drainage after all that—and especially if more than one drain is slow in your house—you should consult a plumber since the problem could be caused by blocked or improper venting of the wastewater system."

"Our sink has been draining very slowly for months; but, complete laziness has kept us from doing anything about it. Last night when we were brushing our teeth, we realized that we'd let it all go too far. So, today, armed with a tea kettle, a Q-tip, a box of baking soda, and a bottle of white vinegar, we got to work."

"Get your materials ready. This method is for those stubborn clogs and therefore requires more materials, including a bucket, screwdriver or wrench, and plumber's snake (also called a drain snake). If you do not have a plumber's snake, you can improvise using a straightened wire hanger. Simply take a regular wire coat hanger and straighten it as much as possible, then bend one end over to create a hook."

Plumber Tools to have at Home

Be prepared for plumbing emergencies

Day 19 - Project 366

Keep a plumbing tool box at home for any emergency plumbing issue. (Photo Credits)

Plumbing emergencies can strike anytime and although the best recourse is to call an emergency plumber ASAP, there is still some waiting time before the trusted plumber can come in.

Some plumbers ask homeowners if they can safely turn off the main water valve or perform some immediate task that could help prevent more damage to the home. Plumbing Association of San Diego

During these times it would be helpful to have some basic plumbing tools and equipment. But what are these tools?

Plumber Hacks homeowners can use when issues arise

Popular Mechanics shared a list of one dozen basic plumbing tools every homeowner needs. A Pipe Wrench is included in their list. A/C And HVAC

"Pipe Wrench: These large, heavy wrenches are used to tighten and loosen threaded pipes, fittings and nuts. You'll need two–one for turning and one for gripping and holding. The serrated teeth help the wrench hold its grip but can damage a fixture's finish–when you need protection, wrap the wrench's jaws in a cloth. Buy a 10-in. ($10-15) and a 14-in. ($20-$25) model."

Check out the whole list here.

Plumber's Essentials

House Logic also shared its own list. First on their list of eight must have plumbing tools in the Plunger.

"No home should be without these suckers/pushers whose rubber cups form a seal around the drain or toilet. Use a cup plunger to push clogs through sinks and tubs; use a flange plunger, with a non-splash ball cup, for toilets. Use a bellows plunger when the other two don't work."

Details to inspect before buying an older home

The Spruce also shared its own list of must haves when it comes to plumbing tools.

The hacksaw made it to their list.

"Plumbing does not always come apart easy and a good hacksaw will surely be useful when cutting any type of pipe, stubborn bolts, nuts, or screws. With a hacksaw you can remove the blade, wrap one in with a cloth, and slip it in for hard to reach places. Many versions of hacksaws big and small are available to choose from. Consider more that one type of saw if possible, such as one large and one small, for different repairs."

Check out the rest of their essential plumbing tools here.

The Consequences of hiring an Unlicensed HVAC Technician

Little Knowledge is Dangerous

The savings is not worth all the risk. (Photo Credits)

When something goes wrong with a home's HVAC system, the initial reaction of any property owner would be to call on a technician. However, if the budget is tight, hiring an unlicensed one can become an appealing option.

But North Carolina Licensing for instance warned its constituents against hiring an unlicensed HVAC Contractor. A/C And HVAC

"Whether you need a contractor for general construction, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, fire sprinkler or electrical work, make sure the contractor has the appropriate license, if required (see Introduction and Licensing). You have few recourses, legal and otherwise, if you hire an unlicensed contractor. Since few unlicensed contractors have adequate insurance, they may expose you to significant financial harm in the event of injury or property damage. Although an unlicensed contractor may give you a low bid, the risks of possible financial and legal consequences you may face probably outweigh any benefits a lower bid may seem to offer."

HG.Org came out with a warning for its readers against transacting with fly-by-night HVAC Technicians.

"California law requires that all persons who act as a "contractor" on behalf of a property owner or other person and who performs work or installs fixtures on a property other than for hourly wages must be "duly licensed" as a contractor by the Contractors State License Board. The License Law requires contractors to establish experience and take a test in the particular specialty category for which they seek a license. They are required to also have a License Bond to protect their customers, and comply with numerous other statutes and regulations."

"Many things can go wrong on a construction job, from injuries to shoddy workmanship to destruction of power, sewer or water lines. Ultimately, all issues are the responsibility of the general contractor. The general contractor and their insurance carriers are the primary payers in the event something goes awry on the job. Now here's the dirty little secret: If you don't hire a licensed and insured contractor to handle your project, you're the general contractor!"
